Commander of NATO Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) - Brunssum official visit

On 16 January 2025, the NATO Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum Commander, General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, honored the NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence (COE) with an official visit. Col. Francesco PACILLO, the NATO M&S COE Director, welcomed General Miglietta and his staff.

The NATO M&S COE presented the Centre’s organization, capabilities, current and future projects in support of the NATO Alliance, Framework Nation and the Centre’s Sponsoring Nations. General Miglietta and the JFC staff provided an overview of Modelling and Simulation initiatives within the Command and discussed potential possibilities for collaboration with the M&S COE.

The COE provided an overview of ongoing research and development projects at the Centre that could support JFC planning and analysis requirements. Some of these projects included: ELMO (Electromagnetic Layer for Multi-domain Operations), a tool capable of building a synthetic electromagnetic environment to virtualize EMSO (Environment for Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization) in multi-domain scenarios, CASTLE (CBRN Activities Simulation Total Layer Environment) a proof-of-concept to federate existing CBRN simulators and visualize CBRN effects in a synthetic environment, MAIDEN (Military Artificial Intelligence for Decision making and Experimentation within NATO); a project to support decision making by integrating M&S tools with Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), CHESS (Cyberspace Hybrid warfare for Educational Strategic Scenarios), a strategic-level, educational wargame designed to help understand the complexity of cyber operations and their influence on a country’s overall stability.

General Miglietta expressed his gratitude for the visit and his appreciation for all the work and projects done by the Centre’s staff and for the Centre’s upcoming diamond event, the 20th NATO CA2X2 (Computer Assisted Analysis, Exercise, Experimentation) Forum, that will take place from 23–25 September 2025 in Rome (Italy). He took the opportunity to invite the Director to the WIDE 2025 (Warfighting Innovation and Demonstration Expo) on 26 March 2025 at NATO HQ JFCBS- Brunssum.

NATO Centres of Excellence are nationally or multi-nationally funded institutions accredited by NATO. They train and educate leaders and specialists from NATO member and partner countries, assist in doctrine development, identify lessons learned, improve interoperability and capabilities, and test and validate concepts through experimentation. They offer recognized expertise and experience that is of benefit to the Alliance and support the transformation of NATO, while avoiding the duplication of assets, resources and capabilities already present within the NATO command structure. Although not part of the NATO command structure, they are part of a wider framework supporting NATO Command Arrangements. [source https://www.act.nato.int/centres-of-excellence]
