Success at the 2nd Practitioner JTLS-GO Course at NATO M&S COE

From October 7 to 11, 2024, the NATO M&S COE (Modelling and Simulation Centre of Excellence) in Rome hosted the 2nd Practitioner JTLS-GO Course, a highly significant training event that brought together ten students from three nations. This course provided a valuable opportunity to delve into the advanced functionalities of JTLS-GO, guided by the expertise of Ms. Ellen Roland, Head of the Simulation Department at RA Valkyrie Enterprises. Ms. Roland, a designer and curator of the simulator since its inception, shared her extensive experience, enabling participants to acquire specialized skills that will be crucial for the future utilization of this system.

The JTLS-GO: A Strategic Platform for Military Simulation

The JTLS-GO (Joint Theatre Level Simulation-Global Operations) is one of the most advanced and strategically significant simulators in the realm of modelling and simulation. Used by NATO and various armed forces worldwide, this system allows for the management of complex simulations involving theatre-level operations, providing an integrated view of operational dynamics. With JTLS-GO, military personnel can practice in realistic environments and simulate large-scale operational and strategic scenarios, testing responses to multi-domain situations in real-time.

Closing Remarks and the Importance of Analytical Capabilities

During the closing remarks, Col. Francesco Pacillo, Director of the M&S COE, emphasized the importance of mastering the diverse functionalities of JTLS-GO, particularly focusing on the system’s analytical capabilities. These features are essential for supporting After Action Review (AAR) activities during military exercises, enabling precise analysis of outcomes and facilitating continuous improvement in operational processes.

Accenture Finland’s Participation and Interest in JTLS-GO

One of the most exciting developments of this edition was the participation of Accenture Finland. Accenture became acquainted with JTLS-GO during the recent NATO CA2X2 Forum held in Rome, expressing strong interest in the simulator’s capabilities, which may be integrated into future Finnish defence activities. This collaboration underscores the growing importance of JTLS-GO as a decision-support and training tool for armed forces globally.

Upcoming Courses and Training Opportunities

The success of the 2nd Practitioner JTLS-GO Course paves the way for new opportunities on the horizon. In June 2025, the “JTLS Foundation Course” will be held, designed for those approaching this complex system for the first time, followed by the 3rd Practitioner JTLS-GO Course in October 2025, which will provide further insights for industry specialists.

The NATO M&S COE continues to be a reference point for advanced training in military simulation, promoting high-quality courses in collaboration with international partners and leading defence industry companies. To stay updated on these initiatives and not miss upcoming events, follow the NATO M&S COE page and its social media channels.

The NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence is dedicated to the promotion of Modelling & Simulation in support of operational requirements, training and interoperability. The Centre act as a catalyst for transformation through the involvement of NATO, governments, academia, industry, operational and training entities, by improving the networking of NATO and nationally owned Modelling & Simulation systems, the cooperation between Nations and organizations through the sharing of Modelling & Simulation information and developments and serving as an international source of expertise for transformation in the related domain. https://www.mscoe.org

NATO Centres of Excellence are nationally or multi-nationally funded institutions accredited by NATO. They train and educate leaders and specialists from NATO member and partner countries, assist in doctrine development, identify lessons learned, improve interoperability and capabilities, and test and validate concepts through experimentation. They offer recognized expertise and experience that is of benefit to the Alliance and support the transformation of NATO, while avoiding the duplication of assets, resources and capabilities already present within the NATO command structure. Although not part of the NATO command structure, they are part of a wider framework supporting NATO Command Arrangements. [source https://www.act.nato.int/centres-of-excellence]
