19th NATO CA2X2 Forum on “Modelling and Simulation,” an event organized by the NATO M&S COE

Rome, 9/24/2024 – The 19th NATO Computer Assisted Analysis, Exercise, Experimentation Forum (CA2X2) is being held, sponsored by NATO Strategic Command Allied Command Transformation (ACT) in Norfolk, USA, and as per tradition organized by the NATO Modelling and Simulation Center of Excellence (M&S COE). The forum brings participants together at the ERGIFE Hotel and Conference Center in Rome. NATO CA2X2 is an innovative forum that aggregates academia, industry and the armed forces around the theme of “Modeling and Simulation” (M&S), with interesting demonstrations and presentations on the latest trends in technology. The theme of this latest edition, stemming from the priorities dictated by the aforementioned Strategic Command, is “Enabling Multi-Domain Operations through Modelling & Simulation.”

Considerable attendance, with over 400 participants from the military, industry and government, 31 nations represented, 26 exhibitors, a variety of working groups and 8 sponsors. Here are some of the topics addressed: support of M&S to the planning and conduct phase of military operations through specific applications, platforms and tools to support: education and training; planning; operational readiness; experimentation; lessons learned and concept development. Specific topics addressed in the current edition directly from the wargaming branches of NATO strategic commands include wargaming in digital mode, through the use of live simulations using models representing the area of operations in order to support and foster commanders’ decision-making from the tactical to the strategic level.

Numerous authorities from both the military, industry, and government sectors remarked during their introductory addresses on the importance of Modelling & Simulation as a strategic tool to maintain focus on long-term goals in the face of sudden political and military changes as well as the role of the M&S CoE and the importance of the CA2X2 Forum in being able to explore the opportunities offered by Modelling & Simulation.

The Director of the M&S COE, Colonel Francesco Pacillo of the Italian Army, in the closing greetings emphasized that the CA2X2 Forum is increasingly a very important interactive hub in which Defense, academia and industry share their projects related to Modelling & Simulation, its applications and new technologies.

Colonel Pacillo went on to highlight that the primary focus of the NATO Center of Excellence, is to support the Alliance and participating NATO nations through expertise, tools, education and training. During these days, new perspectives were opened and effective solutions and new trends were discussed. Among the various objectives achieved in this last edition an important one was to promote the exchange of information and lessons learned among NATO Commands, the nations and the defense industry, with the hope that the CA2X2 Forum can increasingly play a key role in this respect.

Many thanks to all the sponsors who contributed to the success of the event.

All that remains is to look forward to the next edition of the NATO CA2X2 Forum in autumn 2025.
