The mission of the NATO M&S COE is to support NATO and its Nations, as well as participating Partner Nations, by providing subject matter expertise on all aspects of the M&S activities.The NATO M&S COE will focus but not limit its activities to the cooperative aspects of:
Education & training (Education through courses, conferences, seminars and workshops on M&S for personnel such as military decision makers, exercise planners and staff).
Knowledge management, Lessons Learned & Analysis (development and management of shared repositories and web based fora for scenarios, models, simulations, data, techniques, tools and best practices. Analysis of operational Lessons Learned to identify M&S requirements.).
Support to Concept Development & Experimentation (support to the development of CD&E scenarios, models and simulations for NATO and Nations, integration of existing NATO and national M&S tools and activities, development of future NATO and national M&S capabilities including architectures).
Doctrine Development, Standards & Interoperability (enable improved standards and interoperability within the Alliance and Nations, support M&S doctrine on behalf of NMSG and ACT, support the definition and development of the M&S interoperability testing requirements).In discharging its mission and as approved by the NATO M&S COE Steering Committee, the NATO M&S COE may also establish collaborative relationships with entities such as Industry, Academia and other organizations.

As a common and usual task and in accordance with its mission as a NATO COE, NATO M&S COE hosted and supported the ORBAT Design Meeting (ODM) of Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) Stavanger conducted Exercise TRIDENT JAVELIN 17 (TRJN17).
Personnel from the Primary and Secondary Training Audience involved entities attended under the supervision of JWC staff.
The overall purpose of this session was for the ORBAT/Forces Management Team members:
- to set guidelines for consistent data base building (naming conventions , terrain & force resolution , ORBAT Granularity critical supply category ).
- Force generation discussions (TRJN17 Blue Books and Initial Force Packages).
- Enable clear definition of data exchange requirements between providers and builders.
- ORBAT Builder Training. - C2 systems challenges (ICC , LOGFGAS , LC2IS ,MCCIS Any National System involved).
The exercise TRIDENT JAVELIN 2017, a Command Post/ Computer Assisted Exercise with a a three-level Training Audience (TA), will be the main training event for NATO Command Structure Command and Control entities in November 2017 performing a Major Joint Operation ‘Plus’ in a NATO Article 5 environment (exercised for the first time in almost 20 years).
